For decades UK basketball has been run on goodwill and passion for the sport, despite it being the second most popular teamsport in the UK. With a sport that's accessible to so many, covering all the government tick boxes they could imagine, we still struggle to produce pathways for professional athletes in the sport.

SUPER LEAGUE BASKETBALL responds to BBF🏀 👇🏼

-Super League Basketball was created by the existing clubs in the summer of 2024 and awarded the license to operate a professional league in Great Britain for a period of three years. Since then, clubs have collectively invested over £15 million to establish an exciting foundation for growth.

SLB clubs in good faith engaged with the British Basketball Federation throughout last summer to continue elite professional men’s and women’s basketball in Great Britain.

It was understood then that a collaborative approach would be undertaken to secure a longer-term licence on behalf of the SLB. This has not happened, and we have not at any time been consulted or included in its development, despite the fact we were listed as key stakeholders in the tender application process.

Following the BBF’s decision to run an open invitation to tender for the long-term license to run the men’s professional league in GB, the SLB’s shareholders and directors unanimously took the difficult decision to withdraw from the process after concerns were raised over the legality of the BBF’s actions.

Despite communicating these concerns to the BBF over a period of months, the SLB never received any substantive responses and the tender document did not allow for any changes to fees and conditions. This approach would have rendered the league un-investable.

We will continue to engage with all necessary stakeholders in order to safeguard the future of basketball in Great Britain.

Checked out an updated local court, pretty disappointing from a basketball perspective 🏀
❌Lost one complete side of bleachers.
❌No refurbishment of backboard/hoops.
🗺️Floor looks like a subway map.
📏 Questionable layout/dimensions
🤔No basketball lines for using middle court.
2nd most played teamsport in UK, and this is how it's embraced...great foresight 😕
Thankfully they cater well for the 4 people playing badminton....

British Basketball Federation (BBF) has been allocated £2.925million by UK Sport for the period leading to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. The award is augmented by Sport England’s announcement of an additional £1.55million, channelled through Basketball England, which is aimed primarily at boosting GB’s performance in the exciting 3x3 form of the game. In total, this represents a more than threefold increase in public funding for elite basketball at GB level.

Sport England has also invested an uplifted £2.4m over four years into BE’s England Talent Pathway to support the development of players, coaches and professional staff through the junior ranks to elite level.

The awards - the first time UK Sport and Sport England have joined forces in this way - respond to an integrated plan put forward by the BBF and Basketball England.
